Over the past few months, JG Contemporary has hosted an artist residency at The Verdean, Friary Park, in collaboration with Creative Land Trust, Mount Anvil, and Peabody. This three-minute video showcases how the artists used the space and worked with the local community to realise projects. From workshops with local schools to an open-door policy that welcomed passersby to experience the work, the project fostered inclusivity and creativity.
JG Contemporary offered the residency opportunity to a number of local artists with a socially engaged practice, including Genesis Carnival Enterprise led by Symone Williams who used the space to create a giant spectacular costume for Notting Hill Carnival. Acclaimed photographer Derek Santini hosted workshops and photoshoots in the space. Artist Matt Small worked on mosaic portraits made from repurposed scrap metal, whilst welcoming the community through workshops inspired by his work. An exhibition space welcomed local primary schools to take part in the activities. In the video, Jewel Goodby, Director at JG Contemporary says “By opening our doors to residents, we’ve fostered a creative hub where artists, locals, and the wider community connect. This is what it’s all about—seeing creativity thrive and building a sense of community together.”
The programme took place during an early activation period, while part of the building was still undergoing construction. Full fit out of new affordable studios will take place in the coming months and later this year.
