New Artist residency at The Verdean, Friary Park

Artists start setting up in Friary Park, Acton, as an exciting new artist residency brings the space to life.

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of a new artist residency with JG Contemporary at The Verdean, Friary Park, in partnership with Mount Anvil and Peabody.

This week their talented roster of artists are moving in to the street facing unit as an interim use, ahead of handover following the practical completion of the building works, when the space will be transformed into long term affordable creative workspace.

We are eager to activate The Verdean and surrounding areas, the residency promises to be a cornerstone of art and community engagement, fostering a vibrant and prosperous future for Acton.

From September, the unit from Monday to Wednesday 9 am to 5 pm every week and will have an open doors policy. JGC Director Jewel Goodby welcomes residents and the local community to visit the space and see the artists’ process.

A New Chapter for JG Contemporary
Since opening its doors on Acton’s Churchfield Road in December 2019, JG Contemporary has been deeply engaged with the local community, hosting free events at the gallery like “Last Thursdays at JGC,” private views, and artist talks—all aimed at making art accessible and welcoming to everyone. Over the years, it has evolved into a dynamic gallery space, known for embracing a wide spectrum of artistic expressions, from mixed media and street art to photography and beyond.The gallery is also part of the driving force behind the mural project “Acton Unframed,” which brightens the walls of Acton with public art, providing residents with daily access to creative expressions.

A Community-Centric Residency
At Friary Park, JG Contemporary will continue to engage the community through popular evening events. These will invite the community to enjoy art in a relaxed and welcoming environment, stimulating conversation, and a chance to connect with local artists. These events will now be hosted at The Verdean, bringing the local community together in a new and inspiring setting, a full schedule is to be announced in the coming weeks.

Welcoming Talented Artists to Friary Park
As part of the residency, JG Contemporary will be home to a diverse group of artists, including Matt Small, Derrick Santini, and Genesis Carnival Enterprise led by Allyson Williams MBE and Simone Williams-Nelson.

Matt Small: A painter known for his compelling style and use of discarded objects like car bonnets and old signs as canvases. Small’s work focuses on young, dispossessed individuals who feel undervalued. During his time at Friary Park, he will host workshops and open days for the local community, engaging with young people of diverse ethnic backgrounds. These sessions will encourage participants to create artworks responding to the question, “Do you feel you belong?” fostering a deep connection between the artwork and the community.
Derrick Santini: An acclaimed photographer based in Acton, Santini has exhibited in the UK and internationally, with his portraits acquired by the National Portrait Gallery. His residency project will include interactive workshops and portrait sessions designed to bring the community together, celebrating diversity and inclusivity. Santini’s work will highlight the unique individuals that make up the fabric of Acton and London, culminating in a grand exhibition to showcase the community’s stories.
Genesis Carnival Enterprise: A leading force in the Notting Hill Carnival, Genesis has a rich history rooted in the carnival culture of Trinidad and Tobago. Led by Symone Williams, Genesis will deliver educational and creative workshops at Friary Park, teaching the historical and cultural significance of carnival arts. These workshops will inspire and educate participants of all ages, fostering a new generation of creatives and providing opportunities to engage with this vibrant art form.

A Permanent Home for Ealing’s Creative Community
Friary Park is a significant regeneration scheme in Ealing delivered by Mount Anvil and Peabody. Creative Land Trust has secured a 999-year lease, ensuring long-term affordable workspace for artists and creatives.
