Creative Land Trust announces new declaration of a climate emergency.

September 14, 2020

Understanding that we recognise the existence of a Climate Emergency and intend to play our part in addressing it.

Our founder funders have all taken stances. The Mayor of London declared a Climate Emergency in 2018. Arts Council England supports an impressive Environmental Programme, including the guidance produced by Julie’s Bicycle and shared with Trustees. Bloomberg Philanthropies are supporting the use of public art to promote bolder action to address the Climate Emergency.

There is an urgent need to reduce levels of carbon in the atmosphere, and the predictions of impact on society if we collectively fail; the implications for the work of the Trust are obvious. Through declaration and recognition of the Emergency we aim to influence our sector, support the declarations of our partners, and require ourselves to run as an environmentally responsible organisation.

The Creative Land Trust pledges to work with and support our community and partners in tackling this Emergency, and we call on others to do the same.

This is what we’ll do

1. We will tell the Truth

We recognise the reality of the Emergency and will reflect this, where appropriate, in our communications and partnerships, for example with artists and studio providers.

2. We will take Action

We pledge to work towards reducing our emissions to net zero by 2025, as stated in our Sustainability Strategy. We will support the policies and actions of our partners and stakeholders to reduce emissions and tackle the Emergency, and we will work to devise ways in which our organisation can help to regenerate the planet’s resources.

3. We are committed to Justice

We will do what is possible to enable dialogue and expression amidst our communities about how the Emergency will affect them and the changes that are needed. Arts and culture can forge shifts in the ways we relate to one another and the planet, in our values and behaviours, and we will support this, in particular through our commitment to justice for marginalised people.
